Watch Out: Questionable Coupon Links

For some reason I googled the phrase “digital converter coupon” this weekend and saw a link right at the top that said “Get $40 Coupon.” It’s an ad for the site instantgrantsearch.com. And just because it’s on Google doesn’t mean it’s the best way to apply for a DTV coupon.

The link takes you to a page with an American flag emblem and the image of the U.S. Capitol. Looks somewhat official. But the site wants you to submit your home address, phone number and email to find out if you qualify. From there you’re dropped into a series of questions about how many thousands of dollars in government grants you’re interested in. I’m guessing this ends with you paying money to this company for access to a list of government programs.

Obviously, this ain’t how you get that digital TV converter box.

It’s a practice many questionable companies engage in. They find a free service (like the DTV coupon program) that people may want to know about, then purchase Google ads that will appear when people search for it. Their hope is that a few uninformed people will then pay them for access to information that’s available for free elsewhere.

Bottom line: I don’t know if InstantGrantSearch.com is legit or not, but I do know for sure that it’s not the best way to apply for a DTV converter coupon. Ignore the questionable ads and go straight to the government’s website at DTV2009.gov or call 1-888-DTV-2009.

While we’re on the subject, this might be the time to say be sure you dial “1-888″ and not “1-800.” I dialed 800-DTV-2009 a few months ago and found myself listening to a recording trying to sell me a satellite TV system. They must have gotten a little heat for that, because that number now clearly states that “you have not reached the official DTV information line.” Nonetheless, the recording still pushes you to purchase a satellite system to be DTV-ready.

If you’re the tech expert in your family, it might not hurt to be sure friends and family aren’t led astray and know where to turn for the straight story on the DTV transition.
